Yeah, I’m doing a post on these guys, the soon-to-be-over-played Empire of the Sun. They’re great though, similiar to MGMT but also with their own whiff of originality that makes them stand out. Their album came out in 2008 which I cannot see as viable for a band tipped to be huge this year, surely it should be coming out soon, instead of being almost old? To be honest, I suspect and imminent re-release after a large building of hype, especially from NME and the BBC news website, which named them a new sound of ‘09. Well it got ‘08 right with its inclusion of Adele, Duffy and Foals on their list (I mean in terms of popularity, Duffy is boring, Adele is meh and Foals are really good)

For me, the only thing that sort of detracts from their work is the in essence drone like singing, though it benefits being coupled with some high pitched wailing that works well. Well, musically it seems to be the sort of faux-prog-rock with a psychadelic twist as MGMT, but also incredibly oriental-themed, it may just be Austrailia’s closeness to that region but it truly adds something to the music, which in some ways reminds me of Damon Albarn’s Monkey: Journey to the West (also EotS’ video for Walking on A Dream was shot in Shanghai I believe). Anyway, have a listen if you havent, plus get the album.
